A benchmark in eye health since 2007

Founded in August 2007, our eye clinic has established itself as a benchmark in eye health thanks to the adoption of state-of-the-art technology. We have highly specialized equipment — some of it unique in the Central America and Caribbean region — that lets us perform procedures with maximum precision, safety and efficiency.

We are the only ophthalmology clinic in Costa Rica with the international Ambulatory Surgery Center accreditation from ACHC, a U.S. accrediting organization recognized worldwide. This accreditation backs our quality and safety standards in every procedure.

First in the region

Many of the techniques that are routine in Costa Rica today were performed for the first time at this clinic.

2005

First Ferrara Ring implants in Costa Rica, with training directly from Dr. Paulo Ferrara, who invented and developed the implant.

2007

Clínica 20/20 is born, in August.

2007

The country's first artificial cornea transplant (Alphacor), and the first in Latin America to perform the procedure.

2009

The first Intralase arrives in Costa Rica, the only one in Central America and the Caribbean, opening the door to laser cornea transplants and 100% laser intrastromal rings.

2011

Dr. Claudio Orlich, the first Central American physician to operate on cataracts with laser, using the LenSx, the first FDA-approved femtosecond laser.

2014

The addition of the ZEISS VISUMAX 500 makes it possible to perform SMILE, the first minimally invasive, 100% laser refractive surgery with no flap.

2023

The addition of ZEISS SMILE PRO with VISUMAX 800 places Clínica 20/20 at the forefront of refractive surgery. This technology corrects conditions such as myopia, hyperopia and astigmatism through a minimally invasive procedure, without creating a corneal flap, with less than 10 seconds of laser application, fast recovery and greater comfort for the patient.

2023

The ACHC international Ambulatory Surgery Center accreditation confirms that Clínica 20/20 meets rigorous standards of quality, patient safety, regulatory compliance and operational excellence. Being the only ophthalmology clinic in Costa Rica with this accreditation reflects our commitment to standardized processes, independent evaluation and continuous improvement, giving every patient greater confidence and international backing.

2025

Clínica 20/20 hosts the Refractive Surgery Course, establishing itself as a reference in the training and continuing education of specialists.

2026

The ACHC international reaccreditation confirms that Clínica 20/20's excellence is not a one-time achievement, but a commitment sustained over time. Renewing this distinction shows that our processes continue to meet rigorous standards of quality, patient safety and continuous improvement, giving patients the peace of mind of receiving eye care with international backing.

Medical direction

Dr. Claudio Orlich Dundorf

Medical Director · Ophthalmic Surgeon · Specialist in Cornea and Refractive Surgery

Dr. Claudio Orlich is the director of Clínica 20/20. He studied medicine in Costa Rica and completed his residency in Ophthalmology at the Dr. Luis Sánchez Bulnes Hospital of the Asociación para Evitar la Ceguera in Mexico (APEC). After finishing his residency, he completed a subspecialty in Cornea and Refractive Surgery in APEC's Cornea Service.

From March 2003 to September 2008 he worked at the National Children's Hospital and at the Ophthalmology Clinic of the Costa Rican Social Security Fund.

He has published articles in medical journals and has contributed to writing ophthalmology books. He has also been a guest lecturer at numerous international ophthalmology congresses.
